Terletsky, Metodii

Terletsky, Metodii [Терлецький, Методій; Terlec’kyj, Metodij], b ? in Terlo, near Sambir, Galicia, d 7 June 1649 in Kholm. Uniate bishop. A hieromonk of the Basilian monastic order in Kholm (to 1626), he completed a doctorate of divinity in Vienna and undertook missionary work in Transcarpathia and Croatia. As bishop of Kholm (1630–49; see Kholm eparchy) he sought to improve the educational standards of the clergy and established a seminary in Kholm. He was a fervent believer in the Church Union of Berestia and devoted his energies to incorporating the remaining Orthodox Ukrainians into the union. In the 1640s he acted as an intermediary in discussions between the Orthodox metropolitan Petro Mohyla and Adam Kysil concerning the creation of a Kyiv patriarchate in union with Rome.
