Tereshchenko, Marko
Tereshchenko, Marko [Терещенко, Марко; Tereščenko], b 19 January 1894 in Kovalykha, near Smila, Cherkasy county, Kyiv gubernia, d 18 August 1982 in Kharkiv. Theater and film director and actor. He completed study at the Lysenko Music and Drama School (1914) and then worked as an actor in Molodyi Teatr (1916–19), founded and led Tsentrostudiia (later the Mykhailychenko Theater, 1921–5), and was artistic director of the Odesa Derzhdrama (1925–7, 1929–31), the Kharkiv Theater of the Revolution (1931–5), and the Ternopil Franko Ukrainian Drama Theater (1940–1) (see Ternopil Ukrainian Music and Drama Theater). He also worked as guest director in Kyiv, Chernihiv, Poltava, and Okhtyrka theaters (1935–40). In 1927 he directed the films Mykola Dzheria and Navzdohin za doleiu (Pursuing Fate). He wrote Mystetstvo diistva (The Art of the Performance, 1921) and Kriz’ let chasu (Through the Flight of Time, 1976) and taught in the Kharkiv Institute of Culture (1945–76).
