Sushko, Oleksander

Sushko, Oleksander [Сушко, Олександер; Suško], b 1880 in Galicia, d 1966 in Chicago, Illinois, USA. Journalist, civic figure, and teacher. He studied history in Lviv and Vienna, published articles on the 16th-century history of the Ukrainian church, taught at the Academic Gymnasium of Lviv, and edited the pedagogical journal Uchytel’. He emigrated to Canada in 1913 and became an adviser to Bishop Nykyta Budka and editor of the Ukrainian Catholic newspaper Kanadiis’kyi rusyn (1914–16) in Winnipeg. His writings were particularly noted for their Austrophilism. Sushko organized the first conference of Ukrainian Canadians (1915) and then worked for the Protestant monthly Ranok (Winnipeg) (1916) and the journal Ukraïna (2 issues, 1918–19). After moving to the United States of America he lectured at the University of Chicago and Columbia University in New York and was the founding president (in the early 1930s) of an organization called the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences of America (in Detroit, later in Chicago).
