Stupnytsky, Ivan [Ступницький, Іван; Stupnyc'kyj], b 16 October 1816 in Sukhorichia, Galicia, d 22 December 1890 in Peremyshl. Ukrainian Catholic bishop of the Peremyshl eparchy in 1872–90. He warded off attacks by Polish authorities against the Ukrainian Catholic church made under the the pretext of the alleged Russophile orientation in the church. He also used his position in the Galician Diet to obtain a class taught in the Ukrainian language in the Polish gymnasium in Peremyshl in 1888, the first step toward the state-supported Ukrainian-language Peremyshl State Gymnasium that was created in that city in 1895.
