Shashkevych, Volodymyr
Shashkevych, Volodymyr [Шашкевич, Володимир; Šaškevyč], b 7 April 1839 in Nestanychi, Zolochiv circle, Galicia, d 16 February 1885 in Lviv. Writer; son of Markiian Shashkevych. He studied at Lviv University and Vienna University and worked as a civil servant in Galician towns from 1869. His poetry, influenced by folklore and Taras Shevchenko, was published in the literary miscellanies Zoria halytskaia (Galician Star, 1860) and Antolohiia ruska (Ruthenian Anthology, 1881) and in the periodicals Vistnyk (Vienna) (1865), the journal Pravda (1867), and the newspaper Osnova (1872). His collection Zil’nyk (Herbarium) was published in 1863. He also wrote the play Syla liubovy (The Power of Love, 1864), edited the Lviv periodicals Vechernytsi (Lviv) (1862–3) and the weekly Rusalka (1866) and two readers for peasants Zoria (The Star, 1871, 1872), and translated a few of Heinrich Heine’s poems into Ukrainian.
