Sementovsky, Mykola
Sementovsky, Mykola [Сементовський, Микола; Sementovs'kyj], b 2 March 1819 in Semenohirka (now a part of Chervonohirka, near Irkliiv), Zolotonosha county, Poltava gubernia, d 5 November 1879 in Semenohirka. Writer, historian, and ethnographer; brother of Kostiantyn Sementovsky and Oleksander Sementovsky. He graduated from the Nizhyn Lyceum in 1840. Among his works are the play Nishchii (The Pauper; published in Maiak (Saint Petersburg), 1843); the novels Kochubei (1845), Baronessa Flagsberg (1848), and Potemkin (1851); a biographical essay about Ivan Kotliarevsky (published in Severnaia pchela, 1846); and the historical works Starina malorossiiskaia, zaporozhskaia i donskaia (Little Russian, Zaporozhian, and Don Antiquity, 1846), Zaporozhskaia rukopis' ... (Zaporozhian Manuscript ..., 1856), and Kiev i ego sviatyni, drevnosti, dostopamiatnosti (Kyiv and Its Shrines, Antiquities, and Landmarks, 1864; 7th edn 1900).
