Savchenko, Mykhailo
Savchenko, Mykhailo [Савченко, Михайло; Savčenko, Myxajlo], b 6 June 1914 in Hlobyne, Kremenchuk county, Poltava gubernia, d 12 August 1982. Playwright and actor. He graduated from the Kharkiv Music and Drama Institute (1938). He performed at the Kharkiv Ukrainian Drama Theater (1938–41) and the Kyiv Ukrainian Drama Theater (1945–9) and was director of the republican Building of Litterateurs. His first play, Pravo na shchastia (The Right to Happiness), was published in 1957. He published several collections of plays, Rozplata za dovir’ia (Payment for Trust, 1959), Shliakhy do shchastia (Roads to Happiness, 1962), P’iesy (Plays, 1967), Travnevi hrozy (May Storms, 1973), and Hippokraty (Hippocrateses, 1983). Published separately were his plays Lastivka (The Swallow, 1961), Prohnozy (Prognoses, 1962), Syny Hippokrata (Hippocrates’ Sons, 1962), Chest' (Honor, 1963), Mii syn (My Son, 1969), and Proshu vstaty! (Please Rise!, 1971).
