Salikovsky, Oleksander
Salikovsky, Oleksander [Саліковський, Олександер; Salikovs'kyj], b 13 March 1866 in Staryi Potik, Vinnytsia county, Podilia gubernia, d 22 November 1925 in Warsaw. Journalist and civic and political leader. Barred from university by the authorities, he worked as a rural teacher, private tutor, and gubernial civil servant. In 1904 he joined the staff of the paper Kievskie otkliki, and eventually he became its editor. In 1910 he moved to Moscow, where he edited Ukrainskaia zhizn’ with Symon Petliura, and later, to Rostov-na-Donu, where he edited Priazovskii krai (1913–15). After returning to Moscow he resumed editing Ukrainskaia zhizn’ (1915–17) and presided over the Ukrainian Council there. In September 1917 he was appointed gubernial commissioner of Kyiv gubernia by the Russian Provisional Government. As a leading member of the Ukrainian Party of Socialists-Federalists he sat on the Central Rada and the Little Rada. Under the Directory of the Ukrainian National Republic he worked in the internal affairs ministry and edited the daily Trybuna (1918–19) and the monthly Literaturno-naukovyi vistnyk (1919). In May 1920 he was appointed minister of internal affairs in Viacheslav Prokopovych’s cabinet, and in October, deputy prime minister. After emigrating to Poland, he edited the daily Ukraïns’ka trybuna (Warsaw) (1921–2), the monthly Trybuna Ukraïny (1923), and the weekly Ukraïns’ka sprava in Warsaw.
