Sabat, Mykola

Sabat, Mykola [Сабат, Микола], b 9 December 1867 in Obertyn, Horodenka county, Galicia, d 5 August 1930 in Lviv region. Pedagogue and classical philologist; director of the Ukrainian gymnasium in Stanyslaviv in 1905–19 and 1923–7 and director of the Academic Gymnasium of Lviv in 1928–30. During the period of the Western Ukrainian National Republic he headed the secondary school section of the State Secretariat of Education. He was a professor of Greek philology and ancient archeology at the Ukrainian Free University in Prague in 1921–3 and at the Lviv (Underground) Ukrainian University in 1924–5. He wrote on the history of Greek literature and ancient art and in 1929–30 published, in two volumes, Taras Shevchenko’s Kobzar for school-age children.
