Pushkar, Mykola [Пушкар, Микола; Puškar], b 30 October 1894 in Holovchyntsi, Zalishchyky county, Galicia, d 15 September 1989 in Lviv. Slavic philologist and linguist. A graduate of Prague University (PH D, 1925), he studied education at Warsaw University and then taught in gymnasiums in Yavoriv, Łańcut, Rzeszów, Lviv, and Horodok (Lviv region). In 1940–1 and from 1945 to 1974 he taught at Lviv University, chairing its department of Slavic philology in 1950–6. A comparative linguist, he is the author of articles on pedagogy, the Ukrainian language, and the Slovak and Czech languages; a book of lectures on Standard Czech (3 parts, 1963); and books on the palatalization of Ukrainian consonants (1932), and on Czech historical phonetics (2 parts, 1965) and historical morphology (2 parts, 1970, 1972).
