Popov, Pavlo
Popov, Pavlo [Попов, Павло], b 28 July 1890 in Mykolaivka, Putyvl county, Kursk gubernia, Russia, d 4 April 1971 in Kyiv. Literary scholar, fine arts scholar, and folklorist. He graduated from the historical-philological faculty at Kyiv University (1916). From 1934 he was a professor at Kyiv University and a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. Among his scholarly works are Drukarstvo, ioho pochatok i poshyrennia v Evropi (Printing: Its Beginnings and Growth in Europe, 1925), Materiialy do slovnyka ukraïns'kykh graveriv (Materials for a Dictionary of Ukrainian Engravers, 1926), Pro deiaki pytannia teoriï narodnopoetychnoï tvorchosty (On Some Theoretical Issues of Folk Poetry, 1955), Hryhorii Skovoroda: Zhyttia i tvorchist' (Hryhorii Skovoroda: His Life and Works, 1960), Shevchenko i Kyïvs'kyi universytet (Taras Shevchenko and Kyiv University, 1964), and M. Kostomarov iak folkl'oryst i etnohraf (Mykola Kostomarov as Folklorist and Ethnographer, 1968).
