Pliushch, Pavlo

Pliushch, Pavlo [Плющ, Павло; Pljušč], b 31 December 1896 in Volodkova Divytsia, Nizhyn county, Chernihiv gubernia, d 4 March 1975 in Kyiv. Linguist and pedagogue. After graduating from Nizhyn Pedagogical Institute (1923) and Dnipropetrovsk Institute of Social Education (1931) he completed his graduate studies under Ahatanhel Krymsky and from 1937 taught the Ukrainian language at Kyiv University, where he became head of the Ukrainian language department (1955). He published over 100 works, including a collection of exercises in syntax and punctuation (with O. Sarnatsky, 1938; 8th edn 1954); his doctoral dissertation on the history of the Ukrainian language (1958); books on Ivan Kotliarevsky’s humorous linguistic devices in Eneïda (1959) and on the language of Taras Shevchenko’s Kobzar (1964); a history of the Ukrainian literary language (1971) (see Standard Ukrainian); and articles on the history, periodization, and development of the Ukrainian language and on the language and style of the Peresopnytsia Gospel, Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky, Ivan Karpenko-Kary, and Vasyl Stefanyk.
