Pankevych, Yuliian

Pankevych, Yuliian [Панькевич, Юліян; Pan'kevyč, Julijan] (pseud: Prosten Dobromysl), b 4 July 1863 in Ustia Zelene, Stanyslaviv district, Galicia, d 1933 in Kharkiv. Painter, graphic artist, and writer. He studied at the Cracow and Vienna academies of art and was a founding member of the Society for the Advancement of Ruthenian Art in Lviv and one of the pioneers of the Ukrainian ‘native’ style in Galicia. He painted Christ, the Mother of God, and saints in Ukrainian folk costume; portraits of Mykola Kostomarov, Taras Shevchenko (1904), and Ivan Franko (1910); landscapes, such as Waterfall and The Dnister; and genre and historical paintings, such as Groups of People by a Fence, The Defense of Zvenyhorod, and Dovbush’s Rock. He also illustrated editions of Stepan Rudansky’s and Yakiv Shchoholiv’s poetry, ornamented the poetry anthology Akordy (Chords, 1903), and contributed poems, fables, stories, articles, and translations to Galician periodicals. Just before his death he moved to Kharkiv, where he worked at the Hryhorii Skovoroda Museum and painted the canvases In the Carpathians, and Road into the Mountains. A book about Pankevych by Yaroslav Nanovsky was published in Kyiv in 1986.
