Ohonovsky, Ilarii

Ohonovsky, Ilarii [Огоновський, Іларій; Ohonovs’kyj, Ilarij], b 6 December 1854 in Chahriv, Stanyslaviv circle, Galicia, d 10 July 1929 in Lviv. Classical philologist and educator; brother of Omelian Ohonovsky, Oleksander Ohonovsky, and Petro Ohonovsky. After graduating from Lviv University (1884) he was ordained a Greek Catholic priest, and taught at the Academic Gymnasium of Lviv (1884–1914). He compiled a Greek-Ukrainian dictionary of 13,000 words and names in Homer's Odyssey and Iliad (1900); wrote a Ukrainian grammar (with V. Kotsovsky, 1894), a Latin syntax and Latin exercise books for gymnasium students, and articles in classical philology (eg, on Virgil and Demosthenes); and translated classical Greek and Latin works into Ukrainian.
