Novytsky, Mykola D.
Novytsky, Mykola D. [Новицький, Микола; Novyc'kyj], b 1833, d 14 March 1906. Revolutionary figure. A Russian army lieutenant general, he befriended Taras Shevchenko in Saint Petersburg after Shevchenko’s return from exile. In 1860 he negotiated, on behalf of the Society for Assistance to Needy Writers and Scholars (see Literary Fund), the redemption of Shevchenko’s relatives from serfdom. He belonged to the revolutionary group Zemlia i Volia and had ties with the Hromada of Kyiv. In 1889 he published his memoirs of Shevchenko in Kievskaia starina.
