Nesterenko, Oleksii
Nesterenko, Oleksii [Нестеренко, Олексій], b 4 March 1904 in Prystan, Okhtyrka county, Kharkiv gubernia, d 3 November 1997 in Kyiv. Economist; corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR from 1958. After graduating from the Kharkiv Institute of Communist Education (1930) he worked for the Ministry of Education of the Ukrainian SSR. He chaired the department of political economy at Kyiv University (1946–8), directed the Institute of Social Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR in Lviv (1951–3) and the Institute of Economics of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1953–65), and then served as a professor of political economy at the Kyiv Trade and Economics Institute. His works deal with the development of Ukrainian industry and working class and include Rozvytok promyslovosti na Ukraïni (The Development of Industry in Ukraine, 3 vols, 1959–66), Ocherki istorii promyshlennosti i polozheniia proletariata Ukrainy (Outlines of the History of Industry and the Condition of the Proletariat of Ukraine, 1954), Zakonomernosti sotsial'no-ekonomicheskogo razvitiia goroda i derevni (The Patterns of the Socioeconomic Development of the City and Countryside, 1975), and Vozvyshenie potrebnostei v usloviiakh razvitogo sotsializma (Rising Expectations under the Conditions of Developed Socialism, 1981).
