National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine [Національний університет біоресурсів і природокористування України; Natsionalnyi universytet bioresursiv I pryrodokorystuvannia Ukrainy]. An institution of higher learning in Kyiv, formerly under the USSR Ministry of Agriculture. It was formed in 1954 under the name Ukrainian Agricultural Academy through the merger of the Kyiv Agricultural Institute, which had been established in 1922 out of the agricultural department of the Kyiv Polytechnical Institute (est 1898), and the Kyiv Institute of Forest Management, which had been established in 1930 out of the forest engineering faculty (est 1923) of the Kyiv Agricultural Institute. In 1957 the Kyiv Veterinary Institute (est 1921) was brought under the academy. In 1992 it was reorganized into the Ukrainian State Agrarian University and in 1994 was granted the national university status. It was renamed again in 2008 and assumed its present name. The university has 3 educational and scientific research institutes and 13 faculties: land management; agrobiology; agricultural management; plant protection, biotechnology, and ecology; livestock raising and water bioresources; veterinary medicine; law; economics; humanities and pedagogy; food technology and quality control of agricultural products; mechanics and technology; information technologies; and design and engineering. It has a graduate school, several research institutes as well as several regional departments and research farms in various regions of Ukraine. It also has a historical museum and a botanical garden. Its library contains approximately 1,000,000 volumes.
