Myshanych, Oleksa [Мишанич, Олекса; Myšanyč], b 1 April 1933 in Liakhovets, near Mizhhiria, in Transcarpathia, d 1 January 2004 in Kyiv. Literary scholar. After graduating from Uzhhorod University (1956) he completed his graduate studies at the Institute of Literature of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1961) and joined its staff as a research associate. In 1985 he became head of the Department of Old Ukrainian Literature. He has written over 100 articles in the history of Ukrainian literature, folklore, Ukrainian literature in Transcarpathia and Yugoslavia, and inter-Slavic literary relations and has edited a number of anthologies and scholarly collections. His more important monographs are Literatura Zakarpattia 17–18 st. (The Literature of Transcarpathia of the 17th–18th Century, 1964), Hryhorii Skovoroda i usna narodna tvorchist' (Hryhorii Skovoroda and the Oral Folk Tradition, 1976), and Ukraïns'ka literatura druhoï polovyny 18-oho st. i usna narodna tvorchist' (Ukrainian Literature of the Second Half of the 18th Century and the Oral Folk Tradition, 1980).
