Myloradovych, Vasyl

Myloradovych, Vasyl [Милорадович, Василь; Myloradovyč, Vasyl'], b 1 January 1846 in Tokari, Lokhvytsia county, Poltava gubernia, d 1911 in Lytvianky, Lubny county, Poltava gubernia. Ethnographer and folklorist. After graduating in law from Kharkiv University (1869) he served for many years as a justice of the peace in Lubny county. In his free time he studied the folklore, folk songs, and folkways of the local population. His more important articles, which were published in Kievskaia starina, deal with workers’ songs of Lubny county (1985), recruits' and soldiers' songs of Lubny county (1897), Sniatyn antiquities (1897–1900), folk medicine in Lubny county (1900), the daily life of Lubny peasants (1902–4), the central Lubny region (1903), and the steppe Lubny region (1904). His unpublished manuscripts include collections of party and love songs, spring songs, and Saint Peter’s Feast songs. He also translated Heinrich Heine’s, A. Maikov’s, and A. Fet’s poems.
