Matsiievych, Lev [Мацієвич, Лев; Macijevyč], b 13 January 1877 in Oleksandrivka, Yelysavethrad county, Kherson gubernia [now Oleksandrivka (Kirovohrad oblast)], d 7 October 1910 in Saint Petersburg. (Photo: Lev Matsiievych.) Maritime engineer and airplane pilot and civic leader. Matsiievych was active in the Ukrainian student movement, the Revolutionary Ukrainian party, the Ukrainian Social Democratic Workers' party, and the Saint Petersburg Hromada. He graduated from the Kharkiv Technological Institute (1901) and the Nikolai Naval Academy in Saint Petersburg (1906) and worked on the construction of battleships in Sevastopol and at naval installations in Saint Petersburg. He developed a number of advanced submarine designs and anti-mine measures, and worked on theoretical and design problems in aeronautics, as well as designing a hydroplane (1909). He died in a plane crash. A collection of commemorative articles about him was published in Saint Petersburg in 1912.
