Masliak, Volodymyr

Masliak, Volodymyr [Масляк, Володимир; Masljak] (pseud: Volodymyr Zalukvych), b 14 September 1858 in Dibrova, Galicia, d 15 December 1924 in Lviv. Writer, poet, and publicist. He published several collections of poetry, including Poeziï (Poems, 1886) and Z chornoho shliakhu (From the Black Road, 1897). His best poems are similar to folk songs and have been set to music. In his satirical novel Kistiaky Hol’dbaina (Holdbein's Skeletons, 1896) he portrayed the Galician clergy. In 1885 Masliak edited Nove zerkalo, a magazine of political satire, and in 1898 he compiled and published Na velyki rokovyny (On the Great Anniversary), a literary collection in honor of Ivan Kotliarevsky.
