Martynets, Hnat [Мартинець, Гнат; Martynec'], b 25 June 1882 in Kalush, Galicia, d 9 December 1968 in Munich. Pedagogue and community leader. In 1915–17 he was the Austro-Hungarian military mayor of Volodymyr-Volynskyi, where he helped organize the Ukrainian school system in Volhynia. He served as county commissioner of the Western Ukrainian National Republic in Sniatyn (1918–19). From 1924 Martynets lived in Sambir, where he was a cultural and educational activist and director (1941–4) of the local teachers' seminary. From 1944 he lived in Germany and was active in many Ukrainian community activities, especially the Ukrainian Christian Movement, which he headed from 1954 until his death.
