Maksymovych

Maksymovych [Maksymovyč]. A family of Cossack starshyna established by Maksym Vasylkivsky (b in Nizhyn, d ca 1694–8), one of the wealthiest men in the Hetman state. He owned a number of mills and niter sources in the Kyiv region, leased lands from the Sapieha family in the Chornobyl area, and conducted significant trade in Right-Bank Ukraine, Poland, and Moldavia. His sons were Ioan Maksymovych (1651–1715), the archbishop of Chernihiv from 1697 and metropolitan of Tobolsk from 1711; Vasyl (d 1698), the acting colonel of Pereiaslav, slain in a battle with the Tatars on the Kodyma River; Petro, a notable military fellow; Hryhorii, the archpriest of Pereiaslav (1680–1711); Mykhailo and Antin, fellows of the standard; and Dmytro Maksymovych. Dmytro's sons were Fedir, the colonel of Starodub regiment (1741–56), and Ivan P. Maksymovych. Fedir's son, Ivan (d ca 1803), was the first colonel of the Starodub Carabineer Regiment (1783–9) and later a Russian major general and a member of the Novhorod-Siverskyi patriotic circle. Their descendants were landed gentry in Chernihiv gubernia and Poltava gubernia. Mykhailo Maksymovych was a descendant of Vasyl, and Yurii Maksymovych was a descendant of Dmytro.
