Mackiw, Vladimir [Мацьків, Володимир; Mac'kiv, Volodymyr], b 4 September 1923 in Stanyslaviv, Galicia, d 31 January 2001 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Metallurgical engineer; fellow of the Chemistry Institute of Canada and the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, and full member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society from 1962. He was educated at universities in Breslau, Erlagen (1946), and Leuven (1948). He emigrated to Canada in 1948, where he joined Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd (1949) and became a director of research (1952) and executive vice-president (1972). A specialist in the extraction of nickel from ore, he was a member of the National Research Council of Canada (1971–7), an adviser to the Ministry of Energy, Mines, and Resources (1972–9), and chairman of the Nickel Development Institute (1984–6). In 1976 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Alberta, and in 1977 the Gold Medal of the Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in London, England. In 1991 the Mackiw Materials Center was opened in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. Mackiw is the author of numerous scientific publications and the holder of over 50 patents.
