Lyzanivsky, Ivan

Lyzanivsky, Ivan [Лизанівський, Іван; Lyzanivs'kyj], b 29 May 1892 in Zarichia, Zolochiv county, Galicia, d 1934. Civic and political figure and publicist. In 1912 he moved to central Ukraine. He became a member of the Central Rada and of the Central Committee of the Ukrainian Party of Socialist Revolutionaries (UPSR, the so-called central current), as well as one of the founders of the Sich Riflemen. He joined the Committee for the Defense of the Republic (March 1919), directed the Ministry of Press and Propaganda in the government of Borys Martos (from April 1919), and was a member of the regional council in Khmilnyk. In 1921 a Bolshevik tribunal convicted Lyzanivsky at the show trial of Vsevolod Holubovych and the members of the central committee of the UPSR. He was later released, and he worked for Knyhospilka publishers and edited the works of Ivan Franko. In 1934 Lyzanivsky was among those tried by Pavel Postyshev for espionage and treason; he was probably executed by the NKVD.
