Lopatynsky, Yaroslav Y. [Лопатинський, Ярослав; Lopatyns'kyj, Jaroslav], b 19 August 1871 in Dolyna, Galicia, d 14 January 1936 in Holohirky, Zolochiv county, Galicia. Composer. A graduate of the Vienna Medical Institute (1898), he worked as a village physician in Pomoriany (Zboriv county) and then in Holohirky. For some time he codirected the Torban publishing house. He served as a doctor with the Ukrainian Galician Army from 1918 and was eventually captured and imprisoned in Ukraine. He returned to Holohirky in 1923. Lopatynsky’s compositions include pieces for piano, approximately 100 art songs and songs for chorus (‘Vstavai, Ukraïno’ [Arise, Ukraine; 1905]), and stage works, such as the opera Oksana, the comic opera Enei na mandrivtsi (Aeneas on a Journey, 1911), the children's opera Zirka shchastia (Star of Happiness), the fantastic opera Kazka skel’ (Tale of the Cliffs), and several operettas.
