Lopatynska, Filomena

Lopatynska, Filomena [Лопатинська, Філомена; Lopatyns’ka] (née Kravchuk), b 1873 in Chernivtsi, d 26 March 1940 in Odesa. Opera singer (soprano); spouse of Lev Lopatynsky and mother of Favst Lopatynsky. A graduate of the Lviv Conservatory (1904), she performed in 1890–9 at the Ruska Besida Theater in Lviv and later at the Lviv Municipal Opera Theater (see Lviv Theater of Opera and Ballet). For some time she was with the Chernivtsi German theater, although she continued to appear on the Ukrainian stage. In 1915–16 she joined Les Kurbas's Ternopilski Teatralni Vechory theater, and in 1917–23 she performed with the Ukrainian Theater in Chernivtsi and other troupes in Galicia. From the mid-1920s she lived in Soviet Ukraine. Her more important roles included Maryna in N. Kybalchych's Katria Chaikivna, Tatiana in Peter Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, and the title roles in Denys Sichynsky's Roksoliana, Stanisław Moniuszko's Halka, and Georges Bizet's Carmen.
