Lohvyn, Yurii

Lohvyn, Yurii [Логвин, Юрій], b 5 February 1939 in Kremenchuk, Poltava oblast, d 22 May 2019 in Kyiv. Graphic artist and writer; son of Hryhorii Lohvyn. A graduate of the Kyiv State Art Institute (1965) and the Higher Literature Courses of the Gorky Institute of Literature in Moscow, he worked as a book illustrator and created many series of color linocuts and engravings on plastic and wood, among them ‘My Forefathers,’ ‘The Earth and People,’ and ‘Ukrainian Folk Ballads.’ Among the books he illustrated are Hryhorii Kosynka’s Sertse (The Heart, 1967) and Pavlo Tychyna’s poem Skovoroda (1971). His artistic works show the influence of Nikolai Rerikh and Heorhii Narbut. He is the author of prose collections, such as Pivnichne siaivo (The Northern Lights, 1961), Vohon' na skeli (The Fire on the Cliff, 1965), Daleka veselka (The Distant Rainbow, 1970), Znaiomyi lev: Pys'mena mynulykh dniv (The Known Lion: Writings of Past Days, 1972), Kolir dlia neba (Color for the Sky, 1978), and Zakliatyi vershnyk (The Damned Rider, 1990), and the historical novel Taiemnytsia odnoho diamanta (The Secret of One Diamond, 1989).
