Lohvyn, Hryhorii

Lohvyn, Hryhorii [Логвин, Григорій], b 22 May 1910 in Kosivka, Oleksandriia county, Kherson gubernia, d 7 March 2001 in Kyiv. Ukrainian art scholar; father of Yurii Lohvyn. A graduate of the Kharkiv Art Institute (1934) and the Moscow Art Institute (1941), he obtained a doctorate in 1968. Lovhyn wrote extensively on the medieval, Renaissance, and baroque architecture, painting, sculpture, book miniatures, and decorative art of Ukraine. He published in Russian books on the architectural monuments of Kyiv (1960, 1967, 1982), 10th- to 18th-century Ukrainian art (1963), and the architectural monuments of Chernihiv, Novhorod-Siverskyi, Hlukhiv, and Putyvl (1965, 1980) and a guidebook to the artistic monuments of Ukraine and Moldavia (1982). His best-known Ukrainian work is Po Ukraïni (Through Ukraine, 1968), a book on Ukraine’s old artistic monuments. Some of his works have been translated into English, namely Kiev’s Hagia Sophia (1971) and Into the Deep Past: Miniatures and Ornaments in Old Manuscripts of the 11th–18th Centuries (1977). More recently he published a monograph in Ukrainian on engravings in 16th- to 18th-century Ukrainian books (1990). Lohvyn also coauthored a book on Ukrainian medieval painting (1976, with Liudmyla Miliaieva and Vira Svientsitska), contributed chapters to vols 2 and 3 of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR six-volume history of Ukrainian art (1967–8), and was the editor in charge of vols 3 and 4 of the four-volume guide in Russian to the monuments of urban construction and architecture in Ukraine (1985, 1986).
