Livytska, Mariia
Livytska, Mariia [Лівицька, Марія; Livyc'ka, Marija; née Ткаченко; Tkachenko], b 9 April 1879 in Berdychiv, Kyiv gubernia, d 16 August 1971 in Yonkers, New York State. Civic and political figure; wife of Andrii Livytsky and mother of Mykola Livytsky. As a student in Kyiv she was active in the Women's Hromada in Kyiv. After joining the Revolutionary Ukrainian party and its successor, the Ukrainian Social Democratic Workers' party, she was involved in revolutionary activity in Lubny, and in 1909 she was a defendant in the trial of the so-called Lubny Republic. In 1917 she was active in the political life of the Poltava region. She emigrated in November 1920 to Poland, where she served as president of the Union of Ukrainian Emigrant Women in Poland (1927–39). From 1944 she lived in Germany, and from 1954, in the United States. Her memoirs, Na hrani dvokh epokh (Between Two Epochs, 1972), deal with events prior to 1920.
