Liubynsky, Mykola

Liubynsky, Mykola [Любинський, Микола; Ljubyns'kyj], b 5 October 1891 in Strikhivtsi, Nova Ushytsia county, Podilia gubernia, d 8 January 1938 in Sandarmokh, Karelia, RSFSR. Linguist, diplomat, and political activist. A member of the Ukrainian Party of Socialist Revolutionaries (and the leader of its short-lived faction, the Ukrainian National Revolutionary party), he sat on the Central Rada and the Little Rada. He represented the Ukrainian National Republic (UNR) at the Brest-Litovsk peace conference (see Peace Treaty of Brest-Litovsk) and signed an appeal to the German people for military assistance (12 February 1918). In March and April 1918 he served as UNR minister of foreign affairs in Vsevolod Holubovych’s cabinet (see Council of National Ministers of the Ukrainian National Republic). Later, under the Soviet regime, he worked at the Institute of the Ukrainian Scientific Language at the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in Kyiv and was a member of the editorial board of Visnyk instytutu ukraïns'koï naukovoï movy (1930). He was arrested by the GPU in the early 1930s, imprisoned in a GULAG concentration camp, and later executed.
