Lifshyts, Yevhen or Lifshits, Evgenii [Лівшиць, Євген; Lifšyc', Jevhen], b 21 February 1915 in Kharkiv, d 29 October 1985 in Moscow. Theoretical physicist; full member of the USSR Academy of Sciences from 1979. A graduate of the Kharkiv Polytechnical Institute (1933), he worked at the Ukrainian Physical-Technical Institute in Kharkiv (1933–8). In 1939 he moved to Moscow. He made significant contributions to ferromagnetism and relativistic cosmology, and with Lev Landau authored the landmark 10-volume textbook series Course of Theoretical Physics, which was translated into English and many other languages.
