Levytsky, Ivan O.
Levytsky, Ivan O. [Левицький, Іван О.; Levyc'kyj], b 18 January 1850 in Berlohy, Kalush county, Galicia, d 30 January 1913 in Lviv. Bibliographer and writer; member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society and head of its Bibliographic Commission (from 1909). His more important works include a Galician-Ruthenian bibliography of the 19th century with an overview of Ruthenian publications in Hungary and Bukovyna in 1801–86 (2 vols, 1888, 1895), a Galician-Ruthenian bibliography for 1772–1800 (1903), a bibliography of Ukrainian works published in Austria-Hungary in 1887–93 (3 vols, 1909–11), and a biographical dictionary of 19th-century Transcarpathian Ruthenians (incomplete, 4 issues, 1898). He also published a bibliography of Mykhailo Hrushevsky’s works, a history of education in Galicia under Austria, and popular historical tales (under the pseudonym Ivan iz Berloh). A collection of scholarly essays about Levytsky as well as a bibliography of his writings, edited by L. Ilnytska, appeared in Lviv in 2002
