Lepky, Danylo

Lepky, Danylo [Лепкий, Данило; Lepkyj; pseudonyms: Sava Slyvych, D.L. Khomiv, and Sviashchenyk], b 29 December 1858 in Litynia, Sambir circle, Galicia, d 20 March 1912 in Staryi Sambir, Sambir county, Galicia. Priest, writer, and ethnographer. After graduating from the Peremyshl Greek Catholic Theological Seminary (1884) he served as a priest in various villages. In 1900 he was appointed to Staryi Sambir, where he organized a credit union (1901) and headed the local Prosvita society. He was a member of the Ethnographic Commission of the Shevchenko Scientific Society. His short stories began to appear in 1880 in Zoria (Lviv), in which he also published ethnographic and folk art studies. His articles and fiction appeared in Dilo, Bat’kivshchyna, Prosvita almanacs, and other Galician periodicals. He also wrote children’s stories, which appeared in Dzvinok, and novels about the common people.
