Latyshev, Georgii [Латишев, Георгий; Latyšev, Georgij], b 4 February 1907 in Bezhitsa (now part of Briansk), Russia, d 3 April 1973 in Kyiv. Nuclear physicist; corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR from 1945 and full member of the Kazakh SSR Academy of Sciences from 1958. A graduate of the Leningrad Polytechnical Institute (1929), from 1930 to 1941 he worked at the Ukrainian Physical-Technical Institute in Kharkiv. In 1932 Latyshev, Kyrylo Synelnykov, Anton Walter, and Aleksandr Leipunsky became the first in the USSR to induce nuclear disintegration by artificially accelerated particles. In 1958 he organized the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Kazakh Academy of Sciences in Alma Ata, where he served as director. In 1965 he moved to Kyiv. There he worked at the Institute of Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR and, from 1970, at the Institute for Nuclear Research of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR.
