Lashkarov, Vadym or Lashkarev, Vadim [Лашкарьов, Вадим; Laškar'ov], b 7 October 1903 in Kyiv, d 1 December 1974 in Kyiv. Physicist; full member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR from 1945. A graduate of Kyiv Institute of People's Education (1924), he conducted research at Kyiv Polytechnical Institute (1925–30). From 1939 he headed the semiconductor department at the Institute of Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR in Kyiv and taught physics at Kyiv University. In 1951–6 Lashkarov contributed significantly to the development and theory of germanium semiconductor devices. In 1960 the semiconductor department at the Institute of Physics became the core of the newly formed Institute of Semiconductors of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, which Lashkarov directed until 1970. In 1956 Lashkarov initiated Ukraïns’kyi fizychnyi zhurnal. As its editor in chief until his death, he was primarily responsible for its high professional level. After his death the journal succumbed to Russification pressures, and during 1978–89 it was published exclusively in Russian.
