Kyiv Physics and Mathematics Society

Kyiv Physics and Mathematics Society (Київське фізико-математичне товариство; Kyivske fizyko-matematychne tovarystvo). A scholarly society at Kyiv University organized in 1890 out of the mathematics section of the Kyiv Society of Naturalists. The society strove to popularize the study of mathematics and physics and to improve the teaching of these subjects in schools and universities. It held regular meetings throughout its existence (1890–1917), where more than 1,000 presentations were made on mathematics, physics, astronomy, and pedagogy. It published the journal Otchety i protokoly fiziko-matematicheskogo obshchestva. The society’s founder and head until 1904 was the physicist Nikolai Shiller. It had approximately 350 members, including Mikhail Avenarius, Boris Bukreev, Mytrofan Khandrykov, Vasyl Yermakov, and Mykhailo Vashchenko-Zakharchenko.
