Kurinny, Petro
Kurinny, Petro [Курінний, Петро; Kurinnyj], b 1 May 1894 in Uman, Kyiv gubernia, d 25 November 1972 in Munich. Historian, archeologist, ethnographer, and art scholar. He served as academic secretary of the All-Ukrainian Archeological Committee (VUAK), director of the All-Ukrainian Museum Quarter at the Kyivan Cave Monastery, and senior research associate of the Institute of Archeology of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. He excavated sites of the Trypillia culture, of the Bilohrudivka culture, and of the princely era in Kyiv. He was a cofounder of museums in Uman and Berdychiv, and of the All-Ukrainian Museum Quarter in Kyiv. In 1943 he emigrated to Germany where he served as professor at the Ukrainian Free University and at the Theological Academy of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church, president of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts and Sciences in Germany, and editor of Ukraïns’kyi zbirnyk of the Institute for the Study of the USSR in Munich. He was a full member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society. He is the author of articles based on his archeological research and Narysy z istoriï ukraïns’koï arkheolohiï (Studies on the History of Ukrainian Archeology, 1947).
