Kultura

Kultura. Polish monthly journal of politics, arts, and literature published in Paris from 1947 to 2000 by the Instytut Literacki under the editorship of Jerzy Giedroyc. The journal dealt primarily with issues concerning Eastern Europe. It devoted considerable attention to Ukrainian issues, especially in articles by R. Wraga, and published translations of Ukrainian literature by Józef Łobodowski, Stanisław Barańczak, and others. In its ‘Ukrainian Chronicle,’ Kultura surveyed significant developments in Ukrainian life in Ukraine and the West. Matters concerning the Ukrainian Catholic church were dealt with by D. Morawski in the section ‘Correspondence from Rome.’ Among the Ukrainians who have contributed articles to Kultura are Borys Levytsky, Bohdan Osadchuk, Bohdan Struminsky, Wasyl Wytwytcky, Ihor Ševčenko, Ivan Koshelivets, and George Yurii Shevelov. The Instytut Literacki also published a monograph series under the title Kultura Library. This series included several books in Ukrainian or on Ukrainian topics, such as Yurii Lavrinenko’s Rozstriliane Vidrodzhennia (The Rebirth That Was Executed, 1959) and Ukraina, 1956–1968 (Ukraine, 1956–1968, 1969), a collection of documents edited by I. Koshelivets.
