Kryvchenko, Heorhii
Kryvchenko, Heorhii or Yurii [Кривченко, Георгій (Юрій); Kryvčenko, Heorhij (Jurij)], b 15 April 1883 in Kybyntsi, Myrhorod county, Poltava gubernia, d 11 April 1960 in Kyiv. Economist, geographer, and statistician. Kryvchenko studied at Saint Petersburg Polytechnic and then graduated from the University of Munich (1910). After working for government statistical offices in Saratov and Penza, he was an associate (1919–20) of the Institute of Demography of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences and a professor at the Kyiv Institute of the National Economy (1922–31). He also headed the economic terminology department at the Institute of the Ukrainian Scientific Language. Repressed during the Stalinist terror of the 1930s, he was a professor at Kyiv University (1943–52) before returning to the Kyiv Institute of the National Economy (1956–60). Kryvchenko published a number of monographs and statistical surveys of Ukraine and other countries, primarily concerning the development of agriculture. His most notable works include Zbirnyk statystychnykh vidomostei po narodnomu hospodarstvu Ukraïny (Collection of Statistical Data on the National Economy of Ukraine, 1919), Vneshniaia torgovlia Ukrainy v nastoiashchee vremia i do voiny (The Foreign Trade of Ukraine at the Present Time and before the War, 1923), Stanovyshche sil's'koho hospodarstva stepovoï Ukraïny (Agricultural Conditions in the Steppe Region of Ukraine, 1927), and Slovnyk ekonomichnoï terminolohiï (Dictionary of Economic Terminology, 1931; with V. Ihnatovych).
