Kremenchuk Hydroelectric Station (Kremenchutska HES). One of the largest stations of the Dnipro Cascade of Hydroelectric Stations. It was built in 1954–60 on the Dnipro River near Kremenchuk and has a general output capacity of 625,000 kW, producing annually an average of 1.5 billion kWh. The station's 12 generating plants, one-chamber shipping lock, concrete dam, and several earthen levees occupy a 12.6-km-long pressure front. The station is the first in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics to operate without an engine room; its generators are built beneath special metal hoods, and all operations are automated. The Kremenchuk Reservoir was created with the completion of the station's dam.
