Kozak, Yevhen

Kozak, Yevhen [Козак, Євген], b 21 December 1857 in Sloboda-Banyliv, Vashkivtsi county, Bukovyna, d 5 September 1933 in Chernivtsi. Slavist. He studied theology and philology at the universities in Chernivtsi and Vienna (with Vatroslav Jagić) before receiving his PH D from Chernivtsi University in 1891 for his dissertation on the ‘Chernivtsi Collection of 1359.’ He was a professor of Old Church Slavonic language and literature in the theological faculty of Chernivtsi University (1899–1919). His publications include Die Inschriften aus der Bukovina ... (1903), a study of old manuscripts found in the Putna Monastery, and works on the history of the Orthodox church in Bukovyna. Kozak argued that Ukrainians were autochthonous in Bukovyna, and in church affairs opposed the Romanianization of Orthodox eparchies in Bukovyna under Romania’s rule in the interwar period.
