Kovalsky, Mykola O.

Kovalsky, Mykola O. [Ковальський, Микола; Koval's'kyj], b 24 October 1899 in Kyiv, d 20 September 1976 in Courbon, Seine-et-Marne, France. Civic and political figure; publicist. As a member of the Ukrainian National Republic diplomatic corps, he served in the mission in Istanbul and on the delegation to the peace negotiations in Brest-Litovsk (see Peace Treaty of Brest-Litovsk). In 1924 he arrived in France with a contingent of veterans of the Army of the Ukrainian National Republic and became active in the Ukrainian community in Paris. For many years he was secretary of the General Council of the Union of Ukrainian Emigré Organizations in France and of the Society of Former Combatants of the Ukrainian Republican Democratic Army in France. He also belonged to the Ukrainian Free Cossacks society. He contributed articles and verses to Literaturno-naukovyi vistnyk and Tryzub. His publications include an essay on the political situation of Ukraine on the eve of the Second World War (1939) and a collection of verses on diverse themes titled Etiudy: Poeziï (Etudes: Poems, 1978).
