Kovalevsky, Oleksander

Kovalevsky, Oleksander [Ковалевський, Олександер; Kovalevs'kyj], 1890–? Political and civic leader, co-operative organizer, and publicist. A founder and leading member of the Ukrainian People's Republican party (est 1918), he served as Ukrainian National Republic minister of agriculture in 1920. After the First World War he was active in the co-operative movement in Volhynia and was director of the Ukrainbank in Lutsk. In the 1930s he was one of the leading activists of the Volhynian Ukrainian Alliance and edited the pro-government paper Volyns'ke slovo. When the Soviet Army occupied Volhynia in 1939, he was arrested and disappeared.
