Kostruba, Teofil
Kostruba, Teofil [Коструба, Теофіль; monastic name: Теодосій; Teodosii], b 26 May 1907 in Yaholnytsia Stara, Chortkiv county, Galicia, d 3 March 1943 in Lviv. Monk of the Basilian monastic order, historian, and journalist; brother of Petro Kostruba. Kostruba studied philosophy and theology at Lviv University (1935–9) and worked with the Commission on Ancient Ukrainian History of the Shevchenko Scientific Society. His major works focused on the early history of the Ukrainian church and the history of Galicia. His monographs included Narysy z tserkovnoï istoriï Ukraïny X–XIII stolittia (Essays on the Church History of Ukraine from the 10th to 13th Centuries, 1939; 2nd edn 1955), Narys istoriï Ukraïny (A Survey of the History of Ukraine, 1961), which provided an overview of Ukrainian history to the reign of Prince Danylo Romanovych, and Iak Moskva nyshchyla ukraïns'ku tserkvu (How Moscow Destroyed the Ukrainian Church, 1961). His translation of the Galician-Volhynian Chronicle into contemporary Ukrainian language was published in 1936. Kostruba’s articles appeared in the journals Dzvony, Zapysky Naukovoho tovarystva im. Shevchenka, and Litopys Chervonoï Kalyny and the newspapers Khliborobs’kyi shliakh, Nova zoria, Novyi chas, and others.
