Kostiuk, Hryhorii [Костюк, Григорій; Kostjuk, Hryhorij], b 5 December 1899 in Mohylne, Olviopil county, Podilia gubernia, d 25 January 1982 in Kyiv. Psychologist; full member of the USSR Academy of Pedagogical Sciences from 1967; father of Platon Kostiuk. A graduate of Galagan College (1919) and the Kyiv Institute of People's Education (1923), Kostiuk was a lecturer (1930–5) and professor (1935–45) at the Kyiv Pedagogical Institute and a researcher at the Ukrainian Scientific Research Institute of Pedagogy. In 1945 he became director of the Ukrainian Scientific Research Institute of Psychology and of the Kyiv laboratory of pedagogical psychology of the USSR Academy of Pedagogical Sciences. Kostiuk’s principal works deal with the psychology of thought, the relationship between schooling and upbringing and the development of the child’s personality and abilities, and the theory and history of psychology. He is the author of the textbook Psykholohiia (Psychology, 5th edn, 1968) and Zdibnosti ta ïkh rozvytok u ditei (Abilities and Their Development in Children, 1963), and editor of Narysy z istoriï vitchyznianoï psykholohiï (Outlines of the History of Psychology in Our Homeland, 3 vols, 1952–5).
