Koniecpolski, Stanisław, b 9 February 1591 in Koniecpol, Poland, d 12 March 1646 in Brody. Polish magnate and military figure. One of the largest landowners in Bratslav voivodeship, he was the Polish field hetman (1619–32), then grand hetman (from 1632). From 1625 he also headed the commission for the regulation of Cossack affairs. He negotiated the Treaty of Kurukove in 1625 that ended the Cossack uprising led by Marko Zhmailo. Although the Poles had been defeated in the Battle of Borovytsia, Koniecpolski was able to limit the number of registered Cossacks allowed under the terms of the treaty to 6,000. He was again defeated by the Cossacks under Taras Fedorovych at Pereiaslav and concluded the Pereiaslav Treaty of 1630, which increased the number of registered Cossacks to 8,000. He initiated the construction of the Kodak fortress in 1635 and managed to quell the Cossack uprisings led by Yakiv Ostrianyn and Pavlo Pavliuk (1637–8).
