Kolodub, Lev

Kolodub, Lev [Колодуб, Лев], b 1 May 1930 in Kyiv, d 23 February 2019 in Kyiv. Composer and teacher; husband of Zhanna Kolodub. After graduating from Kharkiv Conservatory (1954), where he studied under Mykhailo Tits, Kolodub worked as sound director in the Kyiv Recording Studio (1955–6). Then he taught music theory at the Kyiv Institute of Theater Arts (1958–60), and from 1966 he taught composition and instrumentation at Kyiv Conservatory. He served on the executive of the Union of Composers of Ukraine from 1962, and headed the Union from 1994 to 1997. His works include four operas; two ballets; an operetta, City of Lovers (1969); a cantata for soloists, chorus, and orchestra, Glory to the Fatherland (1951); a poem for orchestra, The Great Stonemason (1953–5), dedicated to Ivan Franko; eleven symphonies, including a symphony-duma, Shevchenko Pictures (1964); The Ukrainian Carpathian Rhapsody (1960); a suite, Hutsul Images (1966); concertos for various instruments and orchestra (1972); chamber music; choral pieces; arrangements of folk songs; art songs; and radio and film music. Kolodub he was awarded the Shevchenko Prize in 2010.
