Kobersky, Ostap

Kobersky, Ostap [Коберський, Остап; Kobers'kyj], b 1895 in Sianik, Galicia, d 19 November 1944 in Trnava, Czechoslovakia. Political leader; brother of Karlo Kobersky. He was one of the organizers of the Galician youth movement before the First World War, and was particularly active in the Sich societies. During the war he rose from the ranks to become a lieutenant in the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen and was twice wounded in battle. A founding member of the Ukrainian Military Organization, he was implicated in Stepan S. Fedak’s attempt on the life of the Polish president Józef Piłsudski. After studying in Prague (1922–5), he worked in a co-operative union in Sambir and served on the executive of the Ukrainian Socialist Radical party.
