Khmilevsky, Prokop

Khmilevsky, Prokop [Хмілевський, Прокоп; Xmilevs'kyj], b ca 1600 in the Mazovia region, Poland, d 22 February 1664 in the Derman Monastery, Volhynia. Monk of the Basilian monastic order and bishop of Peremyshl. He studied in Braunsberg, Prussia. In 1639 he was rector of the ecclesiastic school in Volodymyr-Volynskyi and archimandrite of the Dubno Monastery. In 1651 he was appointed coadjutor of Peremyshl eparchy, and in the next year he succeeded Atanasii Krupetsky as bishop of Peremyshl, Sambir, and Sianik. At about the same time he became archimandrite of Derman Monastery and was given responsibility for administering Lutsk eparchy. Khmilevsky was bitterly opposed by the Orthodox bishop of Peremyshl, Antin Vynnytsky, who refused to permit the spread of the Church Union (see Church Union of Berestia) into the eparchy. He was never allowed to occupy his see and remained in Volhynia until his death.
